CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION ANNOUNCES WINDOW FASHIONS “RECALL TO REPAIR”

On 12/15/09 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary “recall to repair” roman shades and roll-up blinds. Hunter Douglas supports these efforts to make window coverings safer; as do we, as a retailer of Hunter Douglas window fashions.

Hunter Douglas investment in the important area of product safety has produced Vignette® Modern Roman shades – the industry’s only roman shade with no exposed rear cords. Hunter Douglas developed the industry’s first Break-Thru® Safety Tassel for horizontal blinds; and introduced a complete line of LiteRise® cordless operating systems for Vignette® Tiered Modern Roman Shades, Duette® and Applause® honeycomb shades, Brilliance® pleated shades and Hunter Douglas horizontal blinds (Wood, Faux Wood and Aluminum); a broad line of products that use the UltraGlide® retractable cord operating system; a full line of PowerRise® cordless battery powered products, plus a full line of screen and window shades and three types of shutters … all of which are designed with child safety in mind.

An important part of window covering safety is consumer awareness. To improve window covering cord safety when young children are present, consumers are urged to follow these safety guidelines:

  • Consider replacing corded window coverings manufactured before 2001 with new products which meet current safety standards.
  • Move all cribs, beds, furniture and toys away from windows and window cords, preferably to another wall.
  • Keep all window covering pull cords and inner lift cords out of the reach of children. Make sure that tasseled pull cords are no longer than necessary and continuous-loop cords are permanently anchored to the floor or wall with the cords kept taut. Make sure cord stops are properly installed and adjusted to limit movement of inner lift cords.
  • Lock cords into position whenever horizontal blinds or shades are lowered, including when they come to rest on a windowsill.

Any consumer who has a concern about previously purchased roman shades or roll-up blinds can contact the Window Covering Safety Council at www.windowcoverings.org or call (800) 506-4636 to obtain a free retrofit kit for roman shades and roll-up blinds.

Consumers can also contact us at 817-251-4940 if they have questions about the recall or want to purchase child-safe window fashions from Hunter Douglas, especially Hunter Douglas Vignette® Tiered Modern Roman Shades which operate without visible cords.
